CHERRY STREET
LEVEL CROSSING REMOVAL
Part of the Western Program Alliance
Head Contractor: McDonnel Dowell
Scope of work: Earthworks, Drainage and Electrical Infrastructure
The level crossing at Cherry Street, Werribee is being removed by building a road bridge over the rail line, connecting
Tarneit Road and Princes Highway. A well-lit underpass is also being built, which will safely connect pedestrians and cyclists to homes and local shops on both sides of the rail line.
As part of the project, we’re upgrading the intersections at Wattle Avenue and Princes Highway, and Tarneit Road and Railway Avenue. Removing the level crossing will improve safety, increase connections on both sides of the rail line and provide more consistent travel times.
Major construction is well underway to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Cherry Street, which is expected to be removed in 2021, well ahead of the original 2022 target.
